So long we rode this river fast and free

So long we rode this river fast and free,
and thought not on its speed nor of its depth.
Our trip too long to think not on our glee
and chart our course, nor note this water’s breadth.
Few thoughts of those who fell over the side
when rocks against we crashed or storm did rise.
Not close were those though sharing the same ride,
the risk of sailing known and all advised.
To fall so quick into the water cold
a fate not harshly thought of us who sail,
and glad to board this vessel uncontrolled
to face the chance of tempest strong and gale.
This ride with you I take and not look back
to safer shores or course of riskless tack.
