{"id":77917,"date":"2025-04-30T07:37:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T11:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=77917"},"modified":"2025-04-30T07:37:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T11:37:08","slug":"are-jets-in-better-shape-after-offseason-moves-under-mougey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2025\/04\/30\/are-jets-in-better-shape-after-offseason-moves-under-mougey\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Jets in Better Shape After Offseason Moves Under Mougey?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"With Free Agency and Draft Complete, how Much Better or Worse are Jets Than &#039;24?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2fx7dqCQ-5c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/2025\/01\/24\/report-jets-to-hire-broncos-exec-darren-mougey-as-new-gm\/?srsltid=AfmBOopBEBvBgulruqRHZIGtQ6CT0hoS-w7F-ZiANdavcERXkj2jSbwN\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>rookie general manager Darren Mougey<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has now had a full free agency period and NFL draft to help turn around the 5-12 New York Jets.<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;ll have to wait until the games are actually played to find out if the team is better or worse, there are a few spots where the answer is quite obvious, and another spot or two where there is some debate.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, there&#8217;s the quarterback position where there is an interesting discussion to be had.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, is Aaron Rodgers a better passer than Justin Fields?\u00a0 Especially as Rodgers looked better as the season went on?\u00a0 Safe to say he is.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not that simple.<\/p>\n<p>If head coach Aaron Glenn&#8217;s wish was to deploy an offense in which the quarterback is a dynamic runner that has to be accounted for, the Fields is clearly the better fit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/2025\/04\/24\/analyzing-how-armand-membou-fits-into-the-ny-jets-offense\/?srsltid=AfmBOoo8GSZ1WYJ3Uxshz_O0WZ2rjgmD4RFAb-3rcwMZ-FEf3H9AyJMK\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Having drafted Armand Membou<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to get a fifth starter in place, there is a world in which the Jets offense in 2025 will be more efficient than it was in 2024.\u00a0 It will be due largely to running the football, where Fields excels.\u00a0 So while Rodgers is the better passer, Fields may be a better fit.\u00a0 Overall we think it&#8217;s fair to call this a slight downgrade at QB.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s not nearly as bad as it looks on the surface.<\/p>\n<p>The position where the Jets may have done the most work this offseason is defensive tackle.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not to say they did much upgrading.\u00a0 Why is ,that?\u00a0 Well, last year&#8217;s group was so bad that by adding this year&#8217;s crop, they&#8217;ve probably stayed about the same.\u00a0 With a pair of undersized linebackers in Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood, stopping the run will be a challenge this year.\u00a0 Well, unless of course they find a big run stuffer or two between now and September.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"With Free Agency and Draft Complete_ how Much Better or Worse are Jets Than _24_ - JetNation Radio - New York Jets Talk.\" src=\"https:\/\/widget.spreaker.com\/player?episode_id=65799083&#038;theme=light&#038;playlist=false&#038;cover_image_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net%2Fimages.spreaker.com%2Foriginal%2Fb98abb09a591d33ad893c81e5495de9e.jpg#?secret=sBwVu6p27k\" data-secret=\"sBwVu6p27k\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Wide receiver is a spot where one of the biggest downgrades took place.\u00a0 And while it was largely beyond the control of Mougey, the team could have done more to address it.<\/p>\n<p>Davante Adams was a top target for Aaron Rodgers last season but the team knew he wasn&#8217;t going to hang around once they dumped the future Hall of Famer in Rodgers.\u00a0 In response to losing Adams, the Jets added journeyman receiver Josh Reynolds, whose career high in receiving yards came back in 2020 when he logged 618 yards.<\/p>\n<p>Many expected the Jets to take a wide receiver with one of their top picks, but instead they waited until round four to select <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/2025\/04\/26\/breaking-down-the-potential-role-for-arian-smith-in-the-jets-offense\/?srsltid=AfmBOor7yXVYx3g_kQoPipAHOp_oXEwBgX866HvfLojW1AHrGukpzY2p\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Georgia speedster Arian Smith;<\/strong><\/span><\/a> a wideout with a lengthy injury history who had a whopping TEN drops last year.\u00a0 Projected to go in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/arian-smith\/3200534d-4904-1251-9b42-a08f3a861b2a\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>round seven or undrafted entirely<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Smith goes to the Jets with pick 110.\u00a0 This makes it hard to say with a straight face that the Jets got better at receiver.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the downgrades we&#8217;ve seen this offseason, none is more obvious than that of cornerback DJ Reed.\u00a0 One of the NFL&#8217;s better corners since landing with the Jets a few years back, Reed is now replaced by former Baltimore Ravens safety\/corner Brandon Stephens.\u00a0 Last season with the Ravens, opposing quarterbacks targeted Stephens 102 times and 108 times in 2023.\u00a0 Over those two seasons he surrendered a over 1,700 yards according to PFF.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nyjets?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nyjets<\/a> CB DJ Reed vs new Jets cornerback Brandon Stephens over past two seasons:<\/p>\n<p>Stephens:<\/p>\n<p>Tgt: 224<br \/>Rec: 147<br \/>Pct: 66<br \/>Yds: 1,740<br \/>TD: 7<\/p>\n<p>Reed:<\/p>\n<p>Tgt: 130<br \/>Rec: 78<br \/>Pct: 60<br \/>Yds: 906<br \/>TD: 4<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Glenn Naughton (@JNRadio_Glenn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JNRadio_Glenn\/status\/1917541436796424665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Now this one might ruffle some feathers, but take it in the spirit it&#8217;s intended.<\/p>\n<p>Jets fans are largely excited about the arrival of rookie tight end Mason Taylor, who the team hopes will be their first legitimate receiving threat at the position since Justin Keller.\u00a0 However, rookie tight ends (unless you&#8217;re name Brock Bowers), tend to start slow.\u00a0 So as Taylor learns his way around the NFL, expect some hiccups along the way.\u00a0 Hiccups that will mean that rookie Taylor is a downgrade from veteran Tyler Conklin.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t to say that when all is said and done Taylor won&#8217;t be better than Conklin, as many expect he will.\u00a0 But in 2025?\u00a0 Conklin should be the better player.\u00a0 Especially in considering the fact that Conklin didn&#8217;t see nearly as many targets as he should have in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>So while there are some upgrades such as what we hope will be a full season of Olu Fashanu at left tackle and Armand Membou likely outperforming last year&#8217;s tackles, there are a few too many downgrades to expect a big jump in wins this season.<\/p>\n<p>That is of course, unless Aaron Glenn and his staff turn out to be light years ahead of last year&#8217;s staff, which could&#8230;or should, be the case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jets rookie general manager Darren Mougey has now had a full free agency period and NFL draft to help turn around the 5-12 New York Jets.
