The New York Jets announced Wednesday that they have placed running back Curtis Martin on the Reserved\/PUP list.\u00c2\u00a0 The designation means Martin will not participate this season.\u00c2\u00a0 On Tuesday evening, Martin discussed his immediate future with Jets first-year head coach Eric Mangini.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We talked about the plan for next week. At that point, he just didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t feel he was going to be able to practice,\u00e2\u20ac? said Eric Mangini. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153As selfless as he always is, he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to be a distraction and he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to take away anything from the preparation from New England and moving into that game. He thought it would be better if we put him on the Reserved\/PUP list.\u00e2\u20ac? <\/span><\/p>\n

While Martin won’t take part in any games this season, the Jets will still have him assist the team off the field.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is not retirement. It is Reserved PUP which means he will not be able to participate this season,” Mangini said.\u00c2\u00a0 “He will still be part of the team.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He will still take part in all the meetings and help us in any way he can.\u00e2\u20ac?<\/span><\/p>\n

Martin was originally placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list prior to the opening of training camp and he remained on the PUP list for the first eight games this season.\u00c2\u00a0 The 33-year old is the fourth-leading rusher in NFL history with 14,101 yards on 3,518 carries. Martin, a University of Pittsburgh product, has played eight seasons with the Jets, having joined the team as a restricted free agent in March of 1998. With the Jets, Martin has established Club records in nearly every rushing category, including: rushing yards (10,302), rushing attempts (2,560), rushing touchdowns (58), 100-yard rushing games (43), and yards from scrimmage (12,741).\u00c2\u00a0 He and Hall-of-Fame running back Barry Sanders are the only players in NFL history to open their careers with 10 straight 1000-yard seasons.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n
