{"id":56157,"date":"2021-06-21T11:14:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T15:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=56157"},"modified":"2021-06-21T11:16:20","modified_gmt":"2021-06-21T15:16:20","slug":"saleh-betting-on-himself-and-staff-right-out-of-the-gate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2021\/06\/21\/saleh-betting-on-himself-and-staff-right-out-of-the-gate\/","title":{"rendered":"Saleh Betting on Himself and Staff Right out of the Gate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Jets wrapped up their minicamp last week with all players in attendance, head coach Robert Saleh did his end-of-camp Q&amp;A with the media and covered a variety of topics in regards to Gang Green.\u00a0 Perhaps most interesting was what Saleh had to say about his team&#8217;s lack of experience at the cornerback position where there is essentially none.<\/p>\n<p>With no proven veterans to lean on, Saleh sounded like most head coaches when he said he&#8217;d like to get a look at his younger players, but as he began to elaborate, it sounded less and less like a canned answer and increasingly like something Saleh truly believes.\u00a0 Having worked under Pete Carroll with he Seahawks, Saleh quoted the Super Bowl winning head coach regarding young players in saying &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Pete <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Carroll<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> used to say you can\u2019t be afraid to play young guys. They\u2019re hell on wheels and they\u2019re fun to watch. There will be ups and downs. Trials and tribulations. You can\u2019t be afraid because there is light at the end of the tunnel.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a step or two further than most coaches would offer in place of the usual &#8220;we&#8217;re excited about the guys on our roster&#8221; that comes straight off the color-coded head coach wrist band.\u00a0 It also shows the tremendous confidence Saleh has in himself and his staff.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jets cornerbacks career starts w\/ round chosen for those with starts:<\/p>\n<p>Austin: 16 (6th rd)<br \/>Hall: 7 (5th rd)<br \/>Jackson: 6 (UDFA)<br \/>Guidry: 2 (UDFA)<br \/>Ballentine: 2 (6th rd)<br \/>Hardee: 0<br \/>Lewis: 0<br \/>Carter: Rookie<br \/>Echols: Rookie<br \/>Pinnock: Rookie<br \/>Dunn: Rookie<\/p>\n<p>Total: 11 CB&#39;s<br \/>Starts: 33<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Glenn Naughton (@JNRadio_Glenn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JNRadio_Glenn\/status\/1406912782772080642?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Despite veterans Richard Sherman and Steve Nelson sitting on the open market, it looks more and more likely that Saleh and the Jets will go to battle with a group of corners who have started a total of 33 NFL games among them.\u00a0 This is about as young and inexperienced a group of players you&#8217;ll ever see, and Saleh&#8217;s confidence in his coaching staff has to be off-the-charts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve said it before, I think, the difference between player A and player Z in the entire league, I\u2019m not talking about superstars, I\u2019m not talking about the\u00a0<a class=\"nameLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsedge.com\/edge\/football\/nfl\/player\/9301\/aaron-donald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron Donald<\/a>\u2019s of the world, they\u2019re unique, but the difference between player A and player Z is minimal and the only thing that keeps player Z from becoming player A is an opportunity and reps. Let\u2019s see what happens. Does it always happen? It doesn\u2019t, but unless you\u2019re willing to be bold enough to coach your tail off and to invest as much as you can into these young men and give them the opportunity to be seen, give them the opportunity to get reps, and give them the opportunity to get better, you\u2019ll never know what you might find.
