{"id":495,"date":"2006-04-24T19:24:23","date_gmt":"2006-04-25T00:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=495"},"modified":"2010-08-21T05:26:18","modified_gmt":"2010-08-21T05:26:18","slug":"2006-nfl-draft-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2006\/04\/24\/2006-nfl-draft-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"2006 NFL Draft Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Nick Ferraro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is good news this weekend for teams needing help along the lines.\u00c2\u00a0 There are elite prospects on both offense and defense and solid depth through the later rounds.\u00c2\u00a0 That depth will likely mean more draft-day deals than usual as weaker teams with multiple positions to fill look to trade down in order to gain strength in the trenches.\u00c2\u00a0 Line depth is also good news for the league\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strongest teams, as they will have every opportunity to move up to snag the one player who may make the difference.\u00c2<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Things are not so rosy for teams who need help in the defensive secondary, as the talent is scarce. The pickings will also be slim at wide receiver after the first half of round one.\u00c2\u00a0 On the bright side, receiver should be an area where some of the leagues established players become trade bait on draft day.\u00c2\u00a0 Green Bay\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Javon Walker is available for the right price, and Denver\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ashley Lelie has been given permission to work out a trade.\u00c2\u00a0 There are also rumors that Donte Stallworth is on the block in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no shortage of rumors during the last few days leading up to draft day.\u00c2\u00a0 Teams will generate smoke screens in attempts to elicit the best possible offers.\u00c2\u00a0 In the first six, keep your eyes on the Saints, Jets, Packers, and Niners. Each will be willing to drop down in hopes of addressing multiple positions.<\/p>\n<p>In the middle of round one watch the Rams, Ravens, and Broncos.\u00c2\u00a0 The Rams are in a key position given our expectation that Vernon Davis will be around for their turn, and his ridiculous work outs have just about everyone taking notice. Baltimore is in a hot spot as wide receivers Chad Jackson and Santonio Holmes, easily the two best players at the position, figure to be off the board by the 15th pick. The drop off in talent at WR means teams will look to jockey into the Raven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s spot. Denver will be looking to move Lelie and watch for RB Tatum Bell to become draft-day trade bait.\u00c2<\/p>\n<p>At 17, the Vikings will field quite a few calls with interest in DeAngelo Williams.\u00c2\u00a0 Williams is clearly the draft\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s second best runner, and the Viking\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best move is to make him their own.\u00c2\u00a0 San Diego will also be willing to move down from 19 with the elite receivers off the board.<\/p>\n<p>It will be difficult to deal in the last part of round one.\u00c2\u00a0 Teams who haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t made moves forward will be looking to jump out of the first round as the talent from picks 33 through 45 looks as solid as anything from 20 to 32.\u00c2<\/p>\n<p>Though draft-day trades are impossible to predict, we do know that every team will claim they got the guy they wanted and everything went according to their plan.\u00c2\u00a0 The only thing more elusive on draft day than the truth is a sure thing.\u00c2\u00a0 Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s how we think things will shake out this weekend:<br \/>\n\u00c2<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Houston Texans<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0RB &#8211; Reggie Bush\u00c2\u00a0Houston\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best play would be to trade out of the top spot.\u00c2\u00a0 Bush is electric, but there are multiple holes to fill for new head coach Gary Kubiak.<br \/>\n<strong>2. New Orleans\u00c2\u00a0OT<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c D\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Brickashaw Ferguson\u00c2\u00a0This is the hottest spot in the draft.\u00c2\u00a0 The Saints can send legitimate signals on Ferguson, Williams, or Leinart in hopes of attracting a trade partner.<br \/>\n<strong>3. Tennessee\u00c2\u00a0QB<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Matt Leinart\u00c2\u00a0This is an easy choice for the rebuilding Titans.<br \/>\n<strong>4. New York Jets<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0DE \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Mario Williams\u00c2\u00a0With Ferguson off the board, the Jets will be more willing to deal down.\u00c2\u00a0 If they stay here, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll grab Williams and try to fill OT with their next pick at 29.<br \/>\n<strong>5. Green Bay<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0DT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Haloti Ngata\u00c2\u00a0Ngata will plug a porous middle for the defensively challenged Packers.<br \/>\n<strong>6. San Francisco<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A.J. Hawk\u00c2\u00a0Losing Andre Carter and Julian Peterson forces the Niners to think defense.<br \/>\n<strong>7. Oakland<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0QB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Vince Young\u00c2\u00a0The playmaking ability of Young is too hard to pass up despite needs on defense and the offensive line.<br \/>\n<strong>8. Buffalo<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0OT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Winston Justice\u00c2\u00a0With former 1st \u00e2\u20ac\u201c rounder Mike Williams out of the picture, OL is Buffalo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest need.\u00c2<br \/>\n<strong>9. Detroit<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0QB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Jay Cutler\u00c2\u00a0Matt Millen hopes Cutler will help everyone forget about Joey Harrington.<br \/>\n<strong>10. Arizona<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0S \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Michael Huff\u00c2\u00a0The Cards will be disappointed that neither Cutler nor Young are still on the board.<br \/>\n<strong>11. St. Louis<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0TE \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Vernon Davis\u00c2\u00a0The Rams phones will be in overdrive with Davis still on the board at 11.<br \/>\n<strong>12. Cleveland<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0DE\/LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Manny Lawson\u00c2\u00a0If Kellen Winslow returns, it will seem like Cleveland had two first-round picks.<br \/>\n<strong>13. Baltimore<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0OT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Eric Winston\u00c2\u00a0Winston will help revive the Raven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s running game.<br \/>\n<strong>14. Philadelphia<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0WR \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Chad Jackson\u00c2\u00a0The Eagles need a playmaker at WR in the worst way.<br \/>\n<strong>15. Denver<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0WR \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Santonio Holmes\u00c2\u00a0Holmes will make Ashley Lelie expendable and may mean more deals for Denver on draft day.<br \/>\n<strong>16. Miami<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0OT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Marcus McNeil\u00c2\u00a0Miami wants Culpepper\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rebuilt knee to stay out of harms way.<br \/>\n<strong>17. Minnesota<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0RB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c DeAngelo Williams\u00c2\u00a0Williams will finally stop the revolving door at RB for the Vikings.<br \/>\n<strong>18. Dallas<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Ernie Sims\u00c2\u00a0The speedy Sims will be a perfect compliment to DeMarcus Ware.<br \/>\n<strong>19. San Diego<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0C \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Nick Mangold\u00c2\u00a0With the top receivers off the board, the Bolts reach a bit at a position of need.\u00c2<br \/>\n<strong>20. Kansas City<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0DT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Broderick Bunkley\u00c2\u00a0The Chiefs have to fill the middle and find a pass rush.<br \/>\n<strong>21. New England<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Chad Greenway\u00c2\u00a0Greenway doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t impress physically; he just makes all the plays.<br \/>\n<strong>22. San Francisco<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0CB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Tye Hill\u00c2\u00a0With multiple holes to fill, the Niners take the highest remaining player on their board.<br \/>\n<strong>23. Tampa Bay<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0G \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Davin Joseph\u00c2\u00a0Gruden needs people to open holes for his Cadillac.<br \/>\n<strong>24. Cincinnati<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0DE \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Mathias Kiwanuka\u00c2\u00a0Getting outplayed by D\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Brickashaw Ferguson at the Senior Bowl hurt Kiwanuka\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ratings.\u00c2\u00a0 It shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have.<br \/>\n<strong>25. New York Giants<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Demeco Ryans\u00c2\u00a0With Arrington and Ryans, the Giants transform a major deficiency into a strength.<br \/>\n<strong>26. Chicago<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0TE \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Marcedes Lewis\u00c2\u00a0The Bears have to find people who can help them get points on the board.<br \/>\n<strong>27. Carolina<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0RB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Laurence Maroney\u00c2\u00a0Maroney finally gives Carolina a reliable running back <strong>28. Jacksonville<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0TE \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Leonard Pope\u00c2\u00a0The Jags need another target in the passing game.<br \/>\n<strong>29. New York Jets<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0OT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Daryn Colledge\u00c2\u00a0The Jets address their most glaring need with their second pick in round one.<br \/>\n<strong>30. Indianapolis<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0RB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c LenDale White\u00c2\u00a0White\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hamstring injury cost him a few million dollars.\u00c2\u00a0 He will have every chance to make it back in the Colt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s offense.<br \/>\n<strong>31. Seattle<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0LB \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Kamerion Wimbley\u00c2\u00a0With Wimbley and free-agent Julian Peterson, Seattle has options in coverage and on the blitz.<br \/>\n<strong>32.
