{"id":39490,"date":"2018-07-02T07:30:49","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T11:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=39490"},"modified":"2018-07-02T19:47:17","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T23:47:17","slug":"new-york-jets-new-jets-center-should-go-long-way-in-improving-offense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2018\/07\/02\/new-york-jets-new-jets-center-should-go-long-way-in-improving-offense\/","title":{"rendered":"New Jets Center Should go Long way in Improving Offense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an off-season that has included the addition of quarterbacks <a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2018\/04\/27\/round-one-recap-sam-darnold-is-a-jet-ny-jets-podcast\/\"><strong>Sam Darnold<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2018\/03\/13\/new-york-jets-report-jets-finalizing-deal-with-teddy-bridgewater\/\"><strong>Teddy Bridgewater<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0, cornerback Trumaine Johnson and inside linebacker Avery Williamson, it&#8217;s hard to believe that one of the team&#8217;s most important acquisitions could be a middle-of-the-pack offensive lineman, but that&#8217;s exactly the spot the Jets find themselves in.<\/p>\n<p>After playing the 2017 season with the NFL&#8217;s worst center in Wesley Johnson according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.profootballfocus.com\"><strong>ProFootballFocus<\/strong><\/a> rankings, an upgrade had to be made.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How bad Wes Johnson was last season? PFF premium stats tells the story. Their baseline rating is 0.0.  Top graded center in the NFL was J. Kelce (+29.7).  Johnson was dead last (-43.1) 38th of 38.  Spencer Long graded out at -3.9, 16th of 38.  Average player, still huge upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Glenn Naughton (@JNRadio_Glenn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JNRadio_Glenn\/status\/990905903783251968?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Free agents Weston Richburg and Ryan Jensen topped the list of options for the Jets as free agency kicked off.\u00a0 However, Richburg&#8217;s price tag and concussion history made him a less than ideal option, and Jensen was likely a poor fit for what is expected to be a zone-heavy blocking scheme.\u00a0 That left Long as one of the better options on the table, and he was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2018\/03\/14\/new-york-jets-rapoport-jets-to-sign-center-spencer-long\/\"><strong>signed<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to a team-friendly 4-year $27 million deal.\u00a0 The deal is market value, but should Long disappoint, the Jets would be able to cut ties with him after this season with no cap implications.<\/p>\n<p>Should the deal work out as well as the Jets hope, Long&#8217;s presence will be critical in upgrading what was an embarrassingly porous offensive line last season, and taking a look at Long, he passes the eyeball test.<\/p>\n<p>Long will sometimes give ground in pass protection but does a much better job than Johnson of dropping anchor and holding up against opposing defenders.\u00a0 Just look at his PFF numbers from 2017 as an example.\u00a0 Prior to his injury, Long played 397 snaps, surrendering 1 sack, 2 hits and 2 hurries on the quarterback.\u00a0 In comparison, Wesley Johnson played a total 937 snaps, allowing 2 sacks, 6 hits and 15 hurries.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a more than four times as much pressure allowed, despite playing roughly 2 1\/2 times the number of snaps.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Long graded out as the 11th best pass blocking center in the NFL.\u00a0 Ranking just outside the top 10 as a pass blocker may not be great, but it&#8217;s better than most, and infinitely better than Johnson.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Spencer Long ranked 11th among centers with a 98.2 pass blocking efficiency rating in 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jets?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jets<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bZLKQP9kBT\">https:\/\/t.co\/bZLKQP9kBT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; John Gatta (@johngattajr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johngattajr\/status\/973966927180828672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>If you were to combine Long&#8217;s 2017 snap total (397) with his 2016 snap count (804), you would have a total of 1,201 snaps, and even then, the total number of pressures allowed would be 18, or 5 fewer than Johnson allowed last year alone.<\/p>\n<p>In the run game, Long moves much better than Johnson which will be critical for a zone scheme, and also shows itself as an asset in the screen game.<\/p>\n<p>Just how much the Jets O-line will improve remains to be seen, but bringing in Long to solidify the center position was one of the most necessary steps the Jets took this off-season.\u00a0 There will be concerns as to whether or not long can last a full season, however.\u00a0 He missed 9 games last year with a quad injury, and was sidelined for 7 games over the course of the two previous seasons.<\/p>\n<p>If the injuries are a thing of the past, the improvement to the O-line should be immediately evident and beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an off-season that has included the addition of quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater\u00a0, cornerback Trumaine Johnson and inside linebacker Avery Williamson, it&#8217;s hard to believe that one of the team&#8217;s most important acquisitions could be a middle-of-the-pack offensive lineman, but that&#8217;s exactly the spot the Jets find themselves in.
