Wannabe beat writers (aka bloggers) do it.\u00a0 Fans, from the die-hard to the casual part-timer does it.\u00a0 We criticize and second-guess players, coaches, and executives based on hindsight, personal bias and a lack of willingness to simply say &#8220;I got it wrong&#8221; or to say a guy you dislike &#8220;got it right&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Jets head coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan are no different, and here&#8217;s a list of some of Gang Green&#8217;s most pressing issues with what we do know, what we don&#8217;t know, what we sort of know and why it matters.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37302\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37302\" class=\"wp-image-37302\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3-600x469.jpg 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3-768x601.jpg 768w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3-1024x801.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6605-3.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-37302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jets fans appear to be torn on whether or not the team should turn to Bryce Petty.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Starting Quarterback:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:\u00a0<\/strong>Despite a strong pre-season, Bowles passed on Bryce Petty in favor of veteran journeyman Josh McCown to start.\u00a0 He has played well, but is clearly only around for a season or two.\u00a0 Christian Hackenberg was given more work than any quarterback on the roster in the pre-season but was an unmitigated disaster.\u00a0 Sitting at 4-6, many fans view the Jets&#8217; season as a waste as there won&#8217;t be any extensive look at the young quarterbacks and Bowles says he <a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2017\/11\/13\/bowles-sees-no-need-to-play-young-qbs\/\"><strong>can&#8217;t envision a scenario in which he makes a change<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we don&#8217;t know:\u00a0<\/strong>This is the single-most important factor in analyzing Bowles&#8217; decison, and it comes down to ownership.\u00a0 Woody Johnson, the team&#8217;s true owner, is spending his days at <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.usembassy.gov\/our-relationship\/our-ambassador\/ambassadors-residence\/\"><strong>Winfield House<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0nowadays, while his brother Christopher takes the reigns for the next few seasons.\u00a0 Has either owner assured Bowles that he will return as long as the team stays competitive?\u00a0 If not, you can&#8217;t blame Bowles for this decision.\u00a0 In his mind, if he is legitimately fighting for his job, he&#8217;s not going to put it in the hands of a project quarterback.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we &#8220;kind of&#8221; know:\u00a0<\/strong>Before the start of the season, Woody Johnson said that he didn&#8217;t want fans to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/jets\/index.ssf\/2017\/05\/woody_johnson_jets_2017_season_expectations.html\">base the success of 2017 on wins and losses<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>A logical conclusion to such a statement would be that as long as the team isn&#8217;t a total embarrassment, Bowles&#8217; job is safe.\u00a0 If that&#8217;s the case, and the only expectation from ownership is overall effort and improvement, there&#8217;s little excuse for Bowles to refuse to give Petty or Hackenberg a look.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Pending Free Agents:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:\u00a0<\/strong>Two of the team&#8217;s most pleasant surprises this season have been tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and defensive lineman Kony Ealy.\u00a0 Both are due to hit free agency at season&#8217;s end.\u00a0 Fans have been calling for the duo to be re-signed for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we don&#8217;t know:\u00a0<\/strong>Any number of scenarios could be in the works here but only the Jets top brass knows.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that numbers are being exchanged as we speak.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that deals have been agreed on in principle, pending a strong\/healthy finish to the 2017 season.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that the representatives for each player has refused to work on an in-season deal with an eye on driving up the price in free agency.\u00a0 Wanting both players to be signed long-term makes sense and there&#8217;s still plenty of time to get it done.\u00a0 Pretending to know how all sides are conducting business is just silly.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Draft Day Targets:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Nothing.\u00a0 This front office is as tight-lipped as any in the NFL and despite some of the most credible sources in the league being consistently wrong about their intentions, some fans will continue to take the bait.\u00a0 Jets twitter looked like its own version of &#8220;The Trail of Tears&#8221; a few days ago when Matt Miller of Bleacher Report said that a league source told him that the Jets &#8220;love&#8221; Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just heard from a league source that the New York <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jets?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jets<\/a> love Josh Allen. Wyoming source told me they&#39;ve done the most work on him.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nfldraftscout\/status\/931206641860665345?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 16, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Miller followed that up by not naming a source whose opinion was that the Jets have done more work on Allen than anyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we don&#8217;t know:\u00a0<\/strong>How much work the Jets have done on Allen in comparison to every other draft eligible college QB this season.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34236\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34236\" class=\"wp-image-34236\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1-scaled-600x422.jpg 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1-768x541.jpg 768w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1661-1-1024x721.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As expected, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan and his staff have been heavily scouting quarterbacks.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>What we &#8220;kind of&#8221; know:\u00a0<\/strong>If you are keeping an eye on which college games the Jets are scouting, it&#8217;s obvious that they are taking a long look at A LOT of quarterbacks.\u00a0 Without knowing who they have done the most work on, there is no reason to get worked up over one source from one school about one quarterback.\u00a0 Perhaps they&#8217;ve done the most work on Allen, but does that mean they have not done even more work on several other quarterbacks?\u00a0 No&#8230;the answer to that is no, we do not.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Interior O-line:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:\u00a0<\/strong>The Jets&#8217; offensive line has been sub-par this season and center Wesley Johnson has been a big reason for that.\u00a0 Teams can consistently attack the team&#8217;s A-gaps and shut down running plays before they start or put almost immediate pressure on Josh McCown as Johnson ranks 37th of 37 NFL centers according to pro football focus. In all honesty, you don&#8217;t need PFF to tell you that Johnson has been terrible, you&#8217;ve got eyes for that.\u00a0 Back up O-lineman Dakota Dozier has looked like a far better player in limited reps this season and last, but has yet to get a look over Johnson.\u00a0 While Johnson has been terrible, the guards haven&#8217;t been much better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we don&#8217;t know:\u00a0<\/strong>Has Bowles auditioned other players at center during practice and come away still feeling as though Johnson is the best option?\u00a0 If so, it doesn&#8217;t say\u00a0 much for the team&#8217;s depth.\u00a0 Perhaps an even bigger question is how has Johnson impacted guards James Carpenter and Brian Winters.\u00a0 Previously viewed as the two most reliable players on the O-line, both have struggled mightily along with Johnson.\u00a0 Are the two playing with one eye on their assignment and another on Johnson&#8217;s?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we kind of know: <\/strong>Dozier was listed as the team&#8217;s back-up center two years ago but they seem hesitant to use him now.\u00a0 With Dozier being left-handed, something rarely seen in the NFL, are there concerns about the quarterback\/center exchange?<\/p>\n<p>Just a few issues to consider for the Jets but each is critical for its own reason.\u00a0 So while we continue to debate the merits of many of the team&#8217;s decisions, just remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NHipzGL4dwM\"><strong>this classic clip<\/strong><\/a> from former head coach Jim Mora.<\/p>\n<p>Thoughts on this or any other moves we&#8217;ve seen from Maccangnan or Bowles?\u00a0 Click <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.jetnation.com\/topic\/134664-plenty-of-unknowns-make-bowlesmaccagnan-analysis-murky\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> to join our forums and comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National writers do it.\u00a0 Beat writers to it.
