When a young team doesn’t play complementary football you get what you saw last night.\u00a0An offense that doesn’t sustain drives or score points puts the defense on the field\u00a0too often. \u00a0Which leads to fatigue and missed tackles particularly at this stage of\u00a0pre-season. \u00a0Let’s take a look:<\/p>\n
– I’ll give credit to the staff for changing up the QB rotation but Christian Hackenberg\u00a0was overwhelmed. \u00a0He faced the standard defense a DC will throw against a young QB and\u00a0couldn’t produce. \u00a0DET stacked the box against the run and sat on all short routes and\u00a0dared Hackenberg to do something.<\/p>\n
– The OLine didn’t produce enough push in the run game and had too many “whiffs” on blocks which led to rushed throws and sacks.<\/p>\n
– The first extended action from the two young safeties led to a mixed bag. \u00a0Marcus Maye\u00a0was an enforcer and had some good coverage moments. \u00a0Jamal Adams did a good job diagnosing\u00a0plays and was in position but missed way too many tackles.<\/p>\n
– Special teams ball security has too improve. \u00a0Frankie Hammond whiffing on a punt is not\u00a0acceptable.<\/p>\n
– Missed INT opportunities are also not acceptable. \u00a0Juston Burris has to pick off that tipped\u00a0pass early in the game. \u00a0When the defense can set up the offense for points it has to execute.<\/p>\n
– Dexter McDougle had another terrific game, his coverage was excellent his tackling was physical\u00a0and he brought pressure on blitzes. \u00a0Has he jumped over Marcus Williams in the CB rotation?<\/p>\n
– Bryce Petty deserves credit for leading the team to it’s only points and avoiding a shutout.<\/p>\n
– Josh Martin (OLB) continued his excellent summer with another impactful game.<\/p>\n
– Marcus Murphy (RB) showed some promise as the lead returner but again the ball can’t end up\u00a0on the ground.<\/p>\n
– Corey Lemonier (OLB) had an excellent game with an INT and a sack. \u00a0Lorenzo Mauldin needs to\u00a0get on the field and show up because he has competition.<\/p>\n
– A couple of nice catches by Myles White (WR) on Petty passes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
