{"id":28850,"date":"2015-06-15T13:14:29","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T17:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=28850"},"modified":"2015-06-18T13:38:09","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T17:38:09","slug":"pair-of-new-york-jets-jets-pass-catchers-hoping-for-bounce-back-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2015\/06\/15\/pair-of-new-york-jets-jets-pass-catchers-hoping-for-bounce-back-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Pair of Jets Pass-Catchers Hoping for Bounce-Back Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Cumberland.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"311\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Cumberland struggled in 2014<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By Glenn Naughton<\/p>\n<p>With the Jets having recently wrapped up their <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2015\/06\/12\/ny-jets-offseason-minicamp-review\/\">off-season minicamp<\/a>, <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">much of the focus regarding their skill players on offense has centered around newcomers Brandon Marshall and speedy rookie Devin Smith. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marshall, <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2015\/03\/06\/jets-acquire-brandon-marshall-new-yor-jets-todd-bowles\/\">acquired in a trade<\/a><\/span><\/strong> with the Chicago Bears back in March, and\u00a0 Smith, <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2015\/05\/01\/jets-grab-ohio-state-receiver-gregory-new-york-jets-devin-smith\/\">chosen in the second-round<\/a><\/span><\/strong> of this year&#8217;s draft with the 37th overall selection, will each offer a valuable skill-set in 2015 that the Jets hope will open up opportunities for other players to make an impact.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marshall with his red zone presence (15 RZ TD&#8217;s in last 20 games) and Smith&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/draft\/2015\/profiles\/devin-smith?id=2552459\">world class speed<\/a><\/strong><\/span> should make life a little bit easier on a couple of offensive players who struggled last season.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Slot receiver Jeremy Kerley and tight end Jeff Cumberland both saw significant drops in production last season as quarterbacks Geno Smith and Michael Vick failed to throw the ball well with any degree of consistency.<\/p>\n<p>Cumberland, somewhat of an enigma for the Jets since making the team as an undrafted free agent back in 2010 out of the University of Illinois where he played wide receiver,\u00a0 has been inconsistent at best.<\/p>\n<p>Making the transition from college receiver to NFL tight end was a timely endeavor but one that the Jets hoped would pay off in the long run, as\u00a0Cumberland&#8217;s size\/speed ratio proved too enticing to\u00a0pass up as the\u00a06&#8242; 5&#8221;\u00a0TE was clocked in the forty-yard dash at\u00a04.45 during his NFL combine performance.<\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0having the\u00a0measurables, Cumberland has struggled to\u00a0break out as\u00a0 a playmaker while\u00a0the Jets offense has sputtered for the better part of\u00a0a decade with some of the worst QB play in the NFL.\u00a0\u00a0With head coach Todd Bowles recently referring to Cumberland as <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorkjets.com\/news\/article-randylangefb\/5-Takeaways-from-Bowles-Wednesday-Presser\/c08ebf84-9c48-43c2-b718-a2f988f1e1f5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;the first-team tight end&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span> as second-year player Jace Amaro will be used in\u00a0more of an H-back role, one can&#8217;t help but wonder if this will finally be the\u00a0year Cumberland becomes the type of player who other teams have to account for.<\/p>\n<p>Kerley on the other hand, has\u00a0shown the ability to make plays when given the opportunity, hauling in \u00a056 passes for 827 yards just two seasons ago during his sophomore campaign when an injury-riddled receiving corps led to an increased role for the TCU product.<\/p>\n<p>He would see those numbers dip to 43 catches for just 523 yards during Geno Smith&#8217;s rookie year in 2013, but his 15\u00a0receptions over last four weeks of the season gave\u00a0some observers the impression that some chemistry was beginning to build between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Smith relied heavily on Kerley at a time when he was playing some of his best football as the Jets closed out the season winning three of their final four games.\u00a0 During that time, Kerley was targeted 29 times, a number that represented 40% of his total targets on the season\u00a0by the time the season came to an end.<\/p>\n<p>However, that trend wouldn&#8217;t last long.\u00a0 Smith threw Kerley&#8217;s way 24 times, resulting in 15 receptions in Gang Green&#8217;s first three games of 2014.\u00a0 From weeks 4-17 however, Kerley played a total of 13 games and registered 3 or fewer catches in all but one, a week 11 38-3 blowout loss at the hands of the Bills when he pulled down five passes from Smith.\u00a0 For the most part, Kerley was essentially ignored on a struggling Jets offense.<\/p>\n<p>With the arrival of a new offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey and an improved quarterback situation with Smith being pushed by veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets fans will wait and see if Kerley can get back to being the player he was in 2012 when he put up over 800 yards, and if Cumberland, who may be entering a &#8220;make or break&#8221;
