{"id":28506,"date":"2015-05-12T14:05:12","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T18:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=28506"},"modified":"2015-05-12T14:05:12","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T18:05:12","slug":"marcus-gilchrist-vs-afc-east-new-york-jets-todd-bowles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2015\/05\/12\/marcus-gilchrist-vs-afc-east-new-york-jets-todd-bowles\/","title":{"rendered":"Marcus Gilchrist vs. AFC East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Glenn Naughton<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With much of the New York Jets&#8217; off-season defensive overhaul being focused on the addition of cornerbacks Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine, JetNation.com takes a look at former San Diego Charger&#8217;s safety Marcus Gilchrist and his 2014 performance in\u00a0match-ups against his new division rivals&#8230;the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.<\/p>\n<p>For each \u00a0game we&#8217;ll offer our thoughts, as well as a cross-check with Pro Football Focus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.profootballfocus.com\/\">PFF.com<\/a>) to see what they&#8217;re saying about that very same performance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gilchrist vs.\u00a0Buffalo Bills<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In a week 3 meeting between the Bills and Chargers, Gilchrist found himself playing plenty of center field but was also tasked with covering Bills tight end Scott Chandler on numerous occasions. \u00a0With Gilchrist in his hip pocket, Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel didn&#8217;t attempt a single pass in Chandler&#8217;s direction when matched up against the former Charger.<\/p>\n<p>One instance in which Gilchrist&#8217;s play at safety stood out was a trick run by\u00a0Buffalo in the third quarter on 1st &amp; 10 from San Diego&#8217;s 31 yard line. \u00a0Here, the Bills go with what looks like a screen pass that&#8217;s actually a haflback option pass.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28531\" style=\"width: 404px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28531\" class=\"wp-image-28531\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-11-300x177.png\" alt=\"Buffalo Trick Play 1\" width=\"394\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When the throw is made to running back Fred Jackson, Gilchrist starts toward the line of scrimmage but before committing he recognizes the play and stops in his tracks to change direction and provide help with Sammy Watkins over the top.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28533\" style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28533\" class=\"wp-image-28533\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-2-300x148.png\" alt=\"Buffalo Trick Play 2\" width=\"395\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-2-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-2-600x295.png 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-2.png 722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28533\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The corner across from Watkins bites on the play and loses ground too quickly to recover against the speedy Watkins.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28530\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28530\" class=\"wp-image-28530\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-3-300x158.png\" alt=\"Buffalo Trick Play 3\" width=\"391\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-3-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Buffalo-Trick-Play-3.png 574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gilchrist takes a good angle and shadows Watkins stride for stride on an overthrown deep pass that lands harmlessly in the end zone.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In all, Gilchrist did a nice job in coverage against the Bills. \u00a0If there was one area that surprised, it was his lack of aggressiveness in the run game. He seems to be a willing tackler, but in this game he doesn&#8217;t have the type of\u00a0demeanor\u00a0one would expect from a safety who is said to have been lined up as a linebacker from time to time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PFF Crosscheck:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Per PFF, Gilchrist had an average performance in both run and pass games in this contest with a slightly strong rating against the pass. That evaluation seems fair as Gilchrist did his job and spent lots of time playing center field seeing little action come his way. \u00a0He also provided excellent man-to-man coverage on Chandler when called upon to do so.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gilchrist vs. Miami Dolphins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This was a week-nine blowout that saw Miami stomp the error-prone Chargers 37-0. \u00a0Gilchrist spent a fair amount of time as a deep safety (20 plays) and his primary match-up in man coverage was former Dolphin and current Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay. \u00a0Clay managed to get open against Gilchrist more frequently than Buffalo TE Scott Chandler. \u00a0On at least five occasions Clay broke free from Gilchrist but wasn&#8217;t the primary receiver on the majority of those routes. \u00a0Clay managed just one reception when matched up against Gilchrist\u00a0on a quick-out for six yards.<\/p>\n<p>Gilchrist did make a costly mistake that led to a Miami score in the loss.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28542\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28542\" class=\"  wp-image-28542\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Slot CB Blitz\" width=\"435\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1-600x335.jpg 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Slot-CB-Blitz1.jpg 1054w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gilchrist missed an opportunity to prevent the Dolphins from scoring when he crept up to replace a blitzing Chris Davis from the slot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28544\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28544\" class=\"  wp-image-28544\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"Gilchrist inside 10\" width=\"433\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10-600x320.jpg 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10-1024x545.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10-374x200.jpg 374w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-inside-10.jpg 1027w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tannehill reads the blitz and hits wide receiver Jarvis Landry out of the slot\u00a0who ends up facing Gilchrist one-on-one inside the ten-yard line.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28545\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28545\" class=\"  wp-image-28545\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Miami-TD-vs-GIlchrist-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Miami TD vs GIlchrist\" width=\"438\" height=\"276\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landry puts a juke move on Gilchrist before the hesitant safety collides with an oncoming teammate, allowing Landry to get the ball around Gilchrist and across the goal line for a score.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gilchrist&#8217;s performance against Bufflo was a much better showing as he was also in zone coverage on a 38 yard completion to Mike Wallace. In fairness to Gilchrist, he was in position but Ryan Tannehill threw a dart that perfectly split the safeties and Wallace was able to sneak behind Gilchrist for the catch and\u00a0turn it upfield for the big gain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PFF Crosscheck: \u00a0<\/strong>Gilchrist was credited with just four negative grades in pass coverage in 2014 and as one would expect, this one one of those games. \u00a0His -1.9 grade tied for his second-worst showing of the season with a -2.5 versus Denver being his floor. \u00a0As he did in the Buffalo game, Gilchrist graded out as &#8220;average&#8221; against the run.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gilchrist vs. New England Patriots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In facing Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, Gilchrist did a good job matching up multiple times in man-to-man coverage against Patriots receiver Danny Amendola. \u00a0He kept Amendola in check all day and limited any damage when he did allow a completion. \u00a0For Jets fans who have grown tired of watching Brady eat up chunks of yards in the screen game, Gilchrist&#8217;s best play of the game should offer some hope moving forward.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28546\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-Initial-Break1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28546\" class=\"  wp-image-28546\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-Initial-Break1-300x165.png\" alt=\"Gilchrist Initial Break\" width=\"435\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-Initial-Break1-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-Initial-Break1-600x331.png 600w, https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Gilchrist-Initial-Break1.png 765w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On 1st &amp; 10 from the Chargers&#8217; 44 yard line, Brady, from the shotgun, fakes the handoff to Shane Vereen.
