{"id":21303,"date":"2013-08-10T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-10T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=21303"},"modified":"2022-04-01T04:43:50","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T08:43:50","slug":"jets-fall-to-lions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2013\/08\/10\/jets-fall-to-lions\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets Fall To Lions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Jets dropped their preseason opener to the Detroit Lions by a score of 26 &#8211; 17.\u00a0 It is the preseason so we will hold off on a full break down of the game.\u00a0 But here is some reaction and injury updates.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s start with the injuries.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Injury Updates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2013\/08\/09\/geno-smith-injures-ankle\/\"><strong>Geno Smith<\/strong> was injured<\/a> but told the media after the game that his ankle injury isn&#8217;t serious.\u00a0 He wants to practice on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets are thin at running back and that situation got worse with an injury to <strong>John Griffin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">RB John Griffin has a major injury Rex Ryan said, &quot;looks like a fracture.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jets?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jane McManus (@janesports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/janesports\/status\/366030467297845248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>Chris Ivory<\/strong> says he will practice this week and wants to play on Saturday against the Jaguars.\u00a0 The Jets need Ivory back on the field now that Griffin is hurt.\u00a0 Add in the head injury for <strong>Joe McKnight<\/strong> and the uncertain status of <strong>Mike Goodson<\/strong> and running back is an even bigger concern.\u00a0 Ivory, Powell and <strong>Chad Spann<\/strong> all have big opportunities to stand out in front of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LB Garrett McIntrye<\/strong> and <strong>T Dennis Landolt<\/strong> were both injured in the game.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rex doesn&#39;t kno severity of Geno&#39;s injury or McIntyre + Landolt&#39;s. Martin (@ByKimberleyA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByKimberleyA\/status\/366030620771614720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Quarterback<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mark Sanchez<\/strong> did the unthinkable.\u00a0 He threw another pick-6 to a defensive lineman.\u00a0 Simply put, that is the one thing that Jets can not have happen.\u00a0 Yet it keeps happening with Sanchez.\u00a0 Mark did bounce back and ended the day 10\/13 with a TD and 125 yards passing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geno Smith<\/strong> was 6\/7 with 47 yards passing.\u00a0 He looked like a rookie at times and Marty Morhinweg seemed to keep it very simple for him which you would expect in his first game.\u00a0 The ankle injury is worth watching, any missed practice time will really hurt Smith&#8217;s chances of grabbing the starting job in week one.<\/p>\n<p>When you add in <strong>Greg McElroy<\/strong>, the Jets QBs were 27\/39 on the night with 292 yards passing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Unscientific Thoughts (In No Particular Order)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1.\u00a0 The wide receivers were actually open.\u00a0 That is worth mentioning because that hasn&#8217;t been the case for the Jets in recent years.\u00a0 Clyde Gates looked explosive with 3 catches for 39 yards in limited action.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 The Running Game was nowhere to be found.\u00a0 This actually could be a bigger cause for concern than the QB situation.\u00a0 Yes, that is a scary thought but the running game did not exist in this game.\u00a0 The Jets are working in two new guards but when your line reads 16 carries for 37 yards you know you have a lot of work to do.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 One positive for the offensive line is they are feisty.\u00a0 There was a lot of pushing and shoving after the play was over.\u00a0 A lot of that is because the players are cranky in camp.\u00a0 But it does set a nice tone.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Penalties:\u00a0 This will be a big focus for Rex and company this week, there were too many penalties in this game.\u00a0 Most of which were mental errors (offside \\ false start).\u00a0 You can be sure that the players will hear a lot about the 11 \\ 85 line. (11 penalties for 85 yards).<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 <strong>Dee Milliner<\/strong> played like a rookie, he had an excellent play where he knocked down a pass in the end zone but later he had a missed tackle that led to a first down.\u00a0 There was more good than bad with Milliner though.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 The Defense:\u00a0 <strong>Quinton Coples<\/strong> had a sack and the first team defense looked good.\u00a0 <strong>Antwan Barnes<\/strong> is going to help the pass rush but he had two penalties in this game (offsides).<\/p>\n<p>That is it Jets fans, a very unscientific recap of the first game.\u00a0 Remember, it is the preseason so there is no need to panic over a loss.\u00a0 Keep an eye on the injury situation and we will see how much progress they have made when they take the field on Saturday at home against the Jaguars.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 <strong>Tight End Improvement?\u00a0<\/strong> Jets QBs threw to tight ends 3 times, and each pass was completed.\u00a0 <strong>Kellen Winslow<\/strong>, if healthy, is an immense upgrade over Dustin Keller.\u00a0 And the slimmed down <strong>Jeff Cumberland<\/strong> caught a 26 yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Jets dropped their preseason opener to the Detroit Lions by a score of 26 &#8211; 17.\u00a0 It is the preseason so we will hold off on a full break down of the game.\u00a0 But here is some reaction and injury updates.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s start with the injuries.
