Mark Sanchez met with the media on Wednesday and part of that interview appears below.\u00a0 We took the liberty of pruning out the questions that don’t impact things on the field.\u00a0 So to the media member that asked Mark about his long hair, sorry but you didn’t make the cut here.<\/p>\n
These questions all pertain to the upcoming QB competition.\u00a0 One of the most important questions the Jets face heading into this season is who will be the starting quarterback.<\/p>\n
On approaching the quarterback competition\u2026<\/b>
\nExactly that way, just compete, compete my butt off, try to improve every day, focus on the fundamentals, focus on getting better and focus on learning this system.<\/p>\n
On if he expects to be with the team all year\u2026<\/b>
\nAbsolutely, that\u2019s where my head\u2019s at. I\u2019m competing to be the starter.<\/p>\n
On the competition at quarterback\u2026<\/b>
\nIt falls right in line with what John Idzik talked about, bringing in competition at every position. But it also marries up with everything I\u2019ve been about my whole life whether it was in high school, college or making it to the NFL level, competing with other players and earning everything you receive in this league. Nothing is just given. You have to compete to earn it, so it will be fun.<\/p>\n
On whether he comes into the season saying \u2018This is my team\u2019\u2026<\/b>
\nOf course, every quarterback should feel that way. I know I do and I\u2019m not shy about voicing my opinion. You have to own it and compete your butt off to keep it in my position. That\u2019s what I\u2019ll do and I\u2019ll do it the very best I can.<\/p>\n
On whether he has seen everything a competition can throw at him\u2026<\/b>
\nI think I\u2019ve seen pretty much everything. So that\u2019s good. The more years you have, the more experience you gain and you just make sure you take all those experiences, bottle them up somewhere and save them. You know how to react to different situations as they come up, but we\u2019ll prepare and that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to keep on doing, preparing and competing.<\/p>\n
On competing with the other quarterbacks\u2026<\/b>
\nSure, whether it\u2019s (Matt) Simms, (Greg) McElroy, David or Geno (Smith), all those guys want to play and that\u2019s natural for a quarterback to want to play. It\u2019s different than a guard, tackle, receiver or defensive tackle, there\u2019s only one. So we\u2019re all competing for that one spot. We\u2019re friendly about it, but at the same time it\u2019s a fierce competition. I\u2019m excited about all those guys. I\u2019m excited about having them in the quarterback room with me. We\u2019ll learn as much as we can from each other, compete our butts off and the best guy will play and hopefully help the team.<\/p>\n
On whether he feels like this is his team\u2026<\/b>
\nIt has to feel that way going into your fifth year, at least that\u2019s how I feel. I\u2019m confident and I feel like we\u2019ve seen just about everything you can see. So we\u2019ll just keep rolling and do our very best.<\/p>\n
On the team drafting another quarterback\u2026<\/b>
\nThose aren\u2019t my decisions. It\u2019s my job to roll with whatever happens and play the cards (I\u2019m) dealt. John Idzik is trying to field the best football team he can. He feels like Geno (Smith) should be a part of that team and that\u2019s fine. Now, I\u2019m going to compete with Geno and see who\u2019s the starter.<\/p>\n
On whether he was disappointed when they drafted Smith\u2026<\/b>
\nFor what?<\/p>\n
On whether he was disappointed that drafting Smith further infringed on his hold on the starting quarterback job\u2026<\/b>
\nHe\u2019s going to come in here and compete. And if we\u2019re competing for the job, I\u2019m going to do my very best to compete and I expect to play. That\u2019s just the way I am.<\/p>\n
On if he expects to be the opening day starter\u2026<\/b>
\nOf course.<\/p>\n
On if he still views himself as the future of the franchise\u2026<\/b>
\nAbsolutely.<\/p>\n
On whether he feels the front office views him as the future of the franchise\u2026<\/b>
\nAsk them, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
On whether he expects to win the starting job\u2026<\/b>
\nNo doubt. Of course.<\/p>\n
On the front office not declaring a quarterback competition last season compared to this season\u2026<\/b>
\nIt\u2019s a new general manager.<\/p>\n
On whether there wouldn\u2019t be a quarterback competition if he performed better, even with a new general manager\u2026<\/b>
\nI don\u2019t know. Ask John (Idzik). I have no idea.<\/p>\n
On whether Coach Mornhinweg talked to him before or after the draft\u2026<\/b>
\nActually both, he called and he said, \u201cYou doing alright?\u201d (I said), \u2018Yeah, I\u2019m doing fine. Why?\u2019 (He said), \u201cOh, they\u2019re giving you a hard time on TV.\u201d (I said), \u2018I wasn\u2019t even watching, should I be watching?\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u201cWow, that\u2019s up to you. I don\u2019t know, just make sure you\u2019re hanging in there.\u201d (I said), \u2018I\u2019m fine coach, come on man, it\u2019s part of the job.\u2019 Then he called after. He just said, \u201cHey man, we\u2019re heating up the competition, you know that? We just took Geno.\u201d I said, \u2018Alright.\u2019<\/p>\n
On if there are enough reps for three quarterbacks to get a fair chance in an open competition\u2026<\/b>
\nI\u2019ll let you know in camp.<\/p>\n
On if he anticipates a fair opportunity for each quarterback\u2026<\/b>
\nI assume so. That\u2019s everything I\u2019ve heard. Unless, they want somebody to start and then it will be obvious, and the rest of the guys will know.<\/p>\n
On having competition for the starting quarterback position after four years in the league\u2026<\/b>
