{"id":18701,"date":"2013-03-25T00:01:18","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T04:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=18701"},"modified":"2013-03-24T23:54:48","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T03:54:48","slug":"what-can-we-learn-from-the-silence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2013\/03\/25\/what-can-we-learn-from-the-silence\/","title":{"rendered":"What Can We Learn From The Silence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/jn_logo_100.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6393\" alt=\"JetNation Logo\" src=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/jn_logo_100.gif\" width=\"100\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a>When you run a fan site, you learn to love big splashy headlines.\u00a0 They make for easy content and allow for lots of discussion.\u00a0 When you are a die-hard Jets fan, you learn to hate big splashy headlines.<\/p>\n<p>History has proven many of these moves to be short-sighted and have hurt the team in the long run.\u00a0 Acquiring Brett Favre, trading up for Mark Sanchez, putting the team on Hard Knocks, trading for Tim Tebow and trading endless draft picks are a few of the big splash moves that the Jets made under the leadership of Mike Tannenbaum.\u00a0 None of those moves resulted in a Championship.<\/p>\n<p>So far this off-season, there has been a lot of silence from John Idzik.\u00a0 The news about the Jets has been mainly about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Free agent defections:\u00a0 Mike Devito, Dustin Keller, Laron Landry, Yeremiah Bell and Shonn Greene<\/li>\n<li>Darrelle Revis trade speculation<\/li>\n<li>What the Jets will do with Tim Tebow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There has been a surprising amount of silence coming from Florham Park.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t seem to be in a rush to answer criticism.\u00a0 They decided to bring a bunch of QBs to camp and let that play out over the summer. Rather than bring in an Alex Smith and potentially hinder the Jets cap situation in future years.\u00a0 This approach is in stark contrast to holding a press conference for your backup QB.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from the silence?<\/p>\n<p>Some Jets fans think it means that the Jets are asleep at the wheel.\u00a0 I am not in that camp, here is what I think the silence means:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Under the leadership of John Idzik the Jets are no longer concerned with winning the off-season.<\/strong>\u00a0 They are focused on a long-term strategy that will yield results on the field for years to come.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Short term pain can lead to long-term gain<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Jets won 6 games last season and they lost many starters.\u00a0 We won 6 games with you, we can win 6 games without you.\u00a0 That seems to be the approach that John Idzik is taking.\u00a0 By avoiding big splashy moves, they can focus on the draft and improving the roster for the long haul.\u00a0 Getting to 9 wins and a loss in the playoffs isn&#8217;t the goal.\u00a0 Winning the Super Bowl is the goal, so if it takes some time to clean up the roster that is what the Jets have to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Idzik refuses to blink.<\/strong>\u00a0 As a GM of a NY sports franchise, you will be tested time and time again.\u00a0 Your latest move will always be what you are graded on.\u00a0 But in the case of the Darrelle Revis situation, Idzik has not blinked.\u00a0 Time will tell if the Jets sign Revis to a long-term deal or end up trading him.\u00a0 What is refreshing is that Idzik hasn&#8217;t rushed to a decision.\u00a0 The Bucs are rumored to be very interested, yet Idzik is focused on maximizing value.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The silence is a refreshing change from how the Jets have operated in recent years.\u00a0 It would be nice if they can find a way to get Rex Ryan to speak less as well this season.\u00a0 None of it will matter if the Jets lay an egg on draft day, that is where John Idzik will ultimately be graded.\u00a0 Until that time, the silence is a nice change of pace.<\/p>\n<p>What does the silence mean to you?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you run a fan site, you learn to love big splashy headlines.\u00a0 They make for easy content and allow for lots of discussion.\u00a0 When you are a die-hard Jets fan, you learn to hate big splashy headlines.
