{"id":16338,"date":"2012-11-14T17:49:27","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T21:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=16338"},"modified":"2012-11-29T18:59:05","modified_gmt":"2012-11-29T22:59:05","slug":"tim-tebows-potential-salary-incentive-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2012\/11\/14\/tim-tebows-potential-salary-incentive-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Tebow&#8217;s Potential Salary Incentive Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s been some speculation that the Jets are holding QB Tim Tebow back from playing because of a mid-level incentive in his contract.\u00a0 If Tebow were to obtain this incentive it would dramatically increase his 2013 ($5 million) and 2014 ($6.25 million) salary.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the payback\/escalator amounts may have changed, or been the Broncos responsibility, but from resources available the contract numbers seem to be <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/playbook\/dollars\/post\/_\/id\/1827\/is-money-protecting-mark-sanchezs-job\">close <\/a>to what the Jets are currently on the books for and the incentive in question is explained in some detail.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here\u2019s what was posted March 25, 2012:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There has been lots of confusion about Tim Tebow\u2019s contract and exactly what he is going to cost.\u00a0 \u00a0The following is an analysis of his contract:\u00a0 please note that this is pieced together as best as possible using available resources.\u00a0 Hopefully over the next few days more specific contract details will be announced but this should give an overview of what he will cost.<\/p>\n<p>Tebow originally signed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/broncosheadlines\/ci_15667056\">five year $33 million <\/a>contract in 2010 and while it sounds like a lot most of the money is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlygators.com\/08\/03\/2010\/details-of-tebows-rookie-contract-with-broncos\/\">incentive <\/a>driven based upon playing time and performance.\u00a0 One obtainable incentive increases Tebow\u2019s contract by $11.25 million.<\/p>\n<p>He needs to play at least 55% of the snaps two of his first three seasons 2010-12, achieved in 2011, or 70% of the snaps in 2013 to potentially reach this increase.\u00a0 The incentive requires more than just\u00a0achieving a playing time trigger.\u00a0 Tebow will also have to achieve a high quarterback ranking and receive league honors to earn the incentive, but it is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Tebow was given a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.denverpost.com\/broncos\/2012\/03\/21\/tebow-trade-finalized\/12725\/\">$6.275 million salary advance <\/a>in August of 2011.\u00a0 This advance changed Tebow\u2019s base salary to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2012 &#8211; <strong>$540,000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2013 &#8211; <strong>$630,000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2014 &#8211; <strong>$730,000<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since the advance consisted of a $1.2 million decrease in 2011 a little over $5 million was left to be accounted for and it was this money that held up the trade.\u00a0 Denver wanted the Jets to repay them for the entire remaining salary advance.\u00a0 The Jets and Denver settled on <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/new-york\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/7720305\/new-york-jets-denver-broncos-complete-tim-tebow-trade-second-time\">splitting the <\/a>difference $2.53 million. This repayment will be included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/new-york\/jets\/post\/_\/id\/11274\/jets-must-write-34-checks-to-denver\">Jets salary cap $1.5 million in 2012 and $1.03 million in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tebow unlocked some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyjetscap.com\/2012_Articles\/tebowcontract.php\">2012-14 escalators and incentive <\/a>in his contract with his 2011 performance, which the Jets will be responsible for.\u00a0 2012 escalator of $310,000 and a <a href=\"http:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2012\/01\/09\/playoff-wins-are-worth-250000-to-tim-tebow\/\">playoff bonus of $250,000 <\/a>increases by $560,000 Tebow\u2019s base salary.\u00a0 He also triggered a 2012 roster bonus $472,500 due in the start of training camp.\u00a0 Escalators in 2013 of $425,000 and 2014 of $165,000 increase his salary as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the breakdown:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2012:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Base Salary &#8211; <strong>$1.1 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Roster Bonus- <strong>$472,000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Advance Repayment &#8211; <strong>$1.5 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cap Hit &#8211; <strong>$3.072 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2013:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Base Salary &#8211; <strong>$1.055 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Advance Repayment &#8211; <strong>$1.03 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cap Hit \u2013 <strong>$2.085 million<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2014:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Base Salary &#8211; <strong>$895,000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cap Hit &#8211; <strong>$895,000\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently Tebow has <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/new-york\/jets\/post\/_\/id\/11266\/reasons-why-the-jets-made-the-trade\">3 years at $6 million<\/a>\u00a0that the Jets are responsible for but this number could increase given playing time and performance.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition of Tebow\u00a0has lead\u00a0to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/jets\/index.ssf\/2012\/03\/jets_have_decision_to_make_on.html\">trade<\/a> of backup QB Drew Stanton which has freed up $750,000 in salary space.\u00a0 This move does carry a dead money hit of $500,000 which represents Stanton\u2019s signing bonus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s been some speculation that the Jets are holding QB Tim Tebow back from playing because of a mid-level incentive in his contract.\u00a0 If Tebow were to obtain this incentive it would dramatically increase his 2013 ($5 million) and 2014 ($6.25 million) salary.
