{"id":11313,"date":"2012-03-10T22:58:36","date_gmt":"2012-03-11T02:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jetnation.com\/?p=11313"},"modified":"2012-10-04T12:09:23","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T16:09:23","slug":"jets-take-easy-road-in-sanchez-contract-renegotiation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2012\/03\/10\/jets-take-easy-road-in-sanchez-contract-renegotiation\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets Take Easy Road In Sanchez Contract Renegotiation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The news about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/jets\/index.ssf\/2012\/03\/financial_breakdown_of_mark_sa.html\">Mark Sanchez\u2019s contract extension <\/a>broke on Friday night.\u00a0 While Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets organization are towing the company line, \u2018We believe in Mark\u2019, money was a major factor behind this move.<\/p>\n<p>This upcoming season was supposed to be a make or break year for Sanchez.\u00a0 New offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was brought into implement a run first mentality and the team was going to upgrade their protection and receiving core.\u00a0 With only two years left on Sanchez\u2019s rookie contract 2013 would be decision time for the Jets, extend him or cut ties and move on.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez\u2019s old contract would have counted <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/new-york\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/7668318\/new-york-jets-extend-mark-sanchez-deal-end-pursuit-peyton-manning\">$14.25 million<\/a> in 2012 and $8.5 million in 2013, totaling $22.75 million for both years.\u00a0 Most of this money was not guaranteed so Sanchez was vulnerable to being released.\u00a0 Looking at the Jets situation they needed to get some kind of salary cap relief from him but instead of playing \u2018hardball\u2019 they throw a \u2018meatball\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets did not want to threaten Sanchez with release to get a renegotiated contract since they would be vilified if that actually occurred.\u00a0 Letting go a number five overall draft pick after investing $30 million in him would have meant disgrace for the front office, so the Jets took the easy road.<\/p>\n<p>In Sanchez\u2019s new contract the Jets guaranteed his 2012 and 2013 salary totaling $20.5 million.\u00a0 The details are not completely known yet but it is thought that Sanchez will count much less on the 2012 salary cap. \u00a0This contract has also guaranteed he\u2019ll be the starter in 2013, because he can no longer be cut in that year.<\/p>\n<p>Would the Jets have made this move if they were not in such a dire salary cap position?\u00a0 Does Sanchez deserve this vote of confidence at this point in his career or have they simple made a risky\u00a0maneuver to free up resources?<\/p>\n<p>The team has hitched their wagon to Sanchez for at least two more years and has gotten some relief in the process.\u00a0 They will have no leverage over him moving forward, so hopefully Sanchez will develop and be the quarterback for years to come but if he regresses in 2012, what do you do in 2013?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The news about Mark Sanchez\u2019s contract extension broke on Friday night.\u00a0 While Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets organization are towing the company line, \u2018We believe in Mark\u2019, money was a major factor behind this move.
