tackle D&#8217;Brickashaw Ferguson has agreed to restructure his contract to provide the team with some much needed salary cap relief.\u00a0 Ferguson lowered his 2012 guaranteed base salary ($9 million) and had it converted into signing bonus, which changes nothing\u00a0for him financially.\u00a0 Since the current collective bargaining agreement only allows signing bonuses to be prorated over five years this change will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyjetscap.com\/2012_Articles\/afceastcap.php\">create $7.2 million <\/a>in 2012 cap relief.<\/p>\n<p>The $9 million bonus will count $1.8 million under the salary cap each of the following\u00a0years: 2012, 13,1 4,15, and 16.\u00a0 The only negative is the Jets will lose flexibility to cut Ferguson in 2014\/15 if he were to get injured or become less productive.\u00a0 As long as he continues to play at a Pro Bowl level the next few years this move will not\u00a0hurt the team.<\/p>\n<h3>Here are updated salary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyjetscap.com\/2012_Articles\/afceastcap.php\">cap figures <\/a>for the AFC East:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Jets &#8211; <strong>$7.7<\/strong> million under.<\/li>\n<li>Dolphins &#8211; <strong>$11.9<\/strong> million under.<\/li>\n<li>Bills &#8211; <strong>$36<\/strong> million under.<\/li>\n<li>Patriots &#8211; <strong>$22-24<\/strong> million under.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Jets are planning to give restricted free agent\u00a0linebacker Aaron Maybin a <a title=\"Maybin to get first round tender\" href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2012\/02\/24\/maybin-to-get-first-round-tender\/\">first round tender<\/a>, about $1.2 million.\u00a0 This\u00a0offer\u00a0will count against the 2012 salary cap when it is made, so the Jets will have $6.8 million in free space at that time.\u00a0 There are still lots of moves General Manager Mike Tannenbaum\u00a0will have to\u00a0make to create cap space.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some cost cutting ideas are laid out in\u00a0a <a title=\"How The Jets Can Get $29 Million Under The 2012 Salary Cap\" href=\"https:\/\/miletestsite.com\/jets\/2012\/02\/15\/how-the-jets-can-get-29-million-under-the-2012-salary-cap\/\">previous article<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a follow up to a recent article about the 2012 salary cap, and where the Jets stand compared to their AFC east counterparts.\u00a0 Jets&#8217;
