Eric Smith Signs Tender

Courtesy NY Jets.com

The Jets announced today that veteran safety Eric Smith has signed his tendered contract. Smith, a third-round pick out of Michigan State in 2006, is beginning his fifth season with the Green & White.

Last year Smith was a valuable special teams performer who registered 23 tackles. He also started four games defensively, collecting 34 tackles, six PDs and one interception. The 6’1”, 205-pounder has appeared in 55 career games, having started 14 contests with four picks and 17 PDs.

In addition to Smith’s re-signing, the Jets made a pair of March moves at safety — the trade of Kerry Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals and the free agent signing of former Cleveland S Brodney Pool. A restricted free agent, Pool was not tendered a contract by the Browns and inked a deal with the Jets. He had four interceptions last season and 11 in his five-year career with the Brownies.
